- para la Gloria de Dios-

crecí en un hogar cristiano, con un pastor como padre. por partes lo disfrutaba y por ratos era difícil, perdón aún lo es. pero es increíble ver todas las bendiciones que trae pertenecer al ministerio de Dios y ser parte del "negocio familiar". el tiempo ha pasado, y ahora es Dios quien me da oportunidad de usar mis talentos para bendecir a otros y mostrarles siquiera un resplandor del amor de Dios, porque mi fortaleza humana nunca será suficiente para demostrar tan grande amor :)

uno de los privilegios que tengo es ayudar a personas que han decidido mudarse de país, de cultura, de idioma y de todo aquello que les es familiar para poder decirle sí a Dios y estar a su servicio. mi misión es ofrecerles una canal de comunicación a través del cual ellos puedan mostrar quienes son y otros puedan orar por ellos y por su trabajo. me refiero a fotos, y unas lindas para que puedan hacer unas tarjetas de oración que tengan su rostro y nombre para que nadie se olvide de ellos y puedan tenerlos presente siempre.

cada vez que recibo una llamada o un correo que dice: Erika! tenemos un misionero que necesita fotos!, mi corazón se llena de alegría porque es como una pequeña oportunidad que Dios me da para aportar un poquitito al gran trabajo que estas personas realizan, y eso es un GRAN pero GRAN privilegio. y enero trajo consigo muchos momentos de alegría, y aquí están. si los conoces, perfecto ya tienes como recordarles. sino los conoces, igual ora por ellos, tal vez algún día los conocerás :)

-for His Glory-

i grew up in a Christian home, with a pastor as a dad. sometimes i enjoyed it and some others were difficult, i mean it still is. but it is amazing to see all the blessings that come along with being part of the ministry of God and also being part of his "family business". time has flown by and now it is God who gives me the opportunity of using my gifts to bless others and show them a small glimpse of the Lord's love towards them, because in my own strength i will never be capable enough of showing them fully the love of God.

one of the privileges i have is to help people that have chosen to move from one country to another, from one culture to another, and from everything that was familiar to them to say yes to God and be at His service. my mission is to offer them a channel of communication through which they can show who they are and others can pray for their work. i'm talking about pictures, and pretty ones that can be used for their prayer cards, so that others can always remember to pray for them.

every time i receive a call or an email saying: Erika! we have a missionary that needs pics!, my heart jumps of joy because is like God is giving me a small chance of supporting the great work these people do, and that is a GREAT but GREAT privilege!. and january brought along many of these moments of joy, and here i share them with you. if you know them, awesome it will help you to pray for them. if not you can start doing it and who knows, maybe one day you will meet them :)

Tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir una comida con las personas de la comunidad. Muy amablemente habían preparado la sopa de bagre y otras comidas, junto con el masato.

Fue muy interesante ver como las mujeres cocinaban con mucha facilidad en el fuego y conseguían darle un saber agradable sin el uso de mayor condimentos. Definitivamente, para unos fue más difícil comerlo que para otros.

Los alumnos conversaban con las mujeres y hombres shipibo cuando surgió la pregunta de los tintes. Vimos que a uno de los hombres le pintaban el brazo con algo negro, se trataba de una semilla la cual se calienta en el fuego por un momento para ser usada como tinte, ya sea en el cabello o en la piel. Muchos quedaron sorprendidos y entendieron como era posible que su cabello era tan negro. Algunas de las alumnas preguntó: ¿y cada cuánto tiempo se tiñen?. "Cada seis meses",respondió una de las cocineras. ¡SEIS MESES!!, en Lima muchas mujeres morirían por tener ese tinte. Es más, una de las alumnas era peluquera y le regalaron una de las semillas.

Pero bueno, no todo fue una sesión de belleza. Luego del almuerzo había mucho por hacer y poco tiempo, entonces nos pusimos manos a la obra.

Un salón de clase vacio, una mesa, unas cajas de medicinas, unas bolsitas, un estetoscopio y un doctor con un gran corazón fueron suficientes para instalar una pequeña clínica. Una vez que todo estaba listo, había una fila de niños en la puerta esperando ser atendidos. Mientras yo estaba con el doctor, los alumnos fueron a las casas de las familias para aprender de cerca como viven.

Fueron varias horas sentados atendiendo a tantos niños, quienes al final del día tenían una sonrisa enorme por haber conseguido medicinas. Mientras el doctor los revisaba yo conversaba con ellos, claro con los que hablaban español. Fue muy chistoso porque con un cajón empezamos a cantar y bailar, wow, ME DIVERTÍ TANTO CON ELLOS.

Las visitas ya habían terminado, y los alumnos habían preparado un programa para los niños, con juegos y una enseñanza bíblica. El doctor y yo, cerramos la clínica porque ya se habían terminado todas las medicinas. Entonces, a lo lejos vi una net de voley y pensé, ¿un partido en medio de la selva? ¡PORQUE NO!.

Me sorprendí porque apenas llegué a la net nos pidieron apostar dinero, formar un equipo y competir para recuperar el sol que invertimos. Pero a pesar de que habían 8 soles de por medio, nos divertimos un montón.

Llegó la noche y con ella cesaron las actividades para tener un último tiempo todos juntos. Fue el mejor momento del día. Tuvimos un culto, trajeron un generador eléctrico y colocaron los parlantes y el micro para comenzar el culto. Mi papa predicó, los hermanos cantaron, pero la mejor parte fue ver la comunión entre los hermanos shipibo y nosotros los limeños. Un grupo de niñitos se habían sentado alrededor mío y no dejaban de alabar a Dios con mucha energía. Las niñas bailaban con sus trajes más lindos y los adultos decían con mucha convicción: Gracias, Señor.

Un par de parejas se reconciliaron, otros dieron su vida a Cristo y otros tomaron de nuevo el desafío. Quedé muy impactada, pues Dios había hecho un gran trabajo y no porque ellos estuviesen tan lejos de lo que llamamos civilización, significaba que habían sido olvidados por EL. Al contrario, El seguía siendo fiel ...

We had the opportunity to share a meal with the community. They were very kind to prepare catfish soup for us and other meals, along with masato (a typical drink from the jungle).

It was very interesting to see how the women were cooking so easily with fire and got to give the food a delicious taste without using spices. It definitely was easier for some to eat the food than others.

The students were talking with the men and women from the Shipibo connibo community when a question about a type of dye they use came up. We saw how one of the men was getting his arm painted with something black, it was a seed which after being in the fire for a few

minutes, can be used as a dye, either for the hair or skin. Many were surprised and understood how it was possible for those ladies to have their hair incredibly black. One of the ladies in our team asked her: How often do you dye your hair?. "Every six months", one of cooks respond. SIX MONTHS!!!, in Lima many ladies would die to have this dye. Even more, one of the students was a hair dresser and they gave her one of the seeds (which is hug by the way) so that she could test it.

There were many hours attending the kids, whom had great smiles at the end of the day because of the medicine they got. While the doctors was checking the kids, i would talk to them, of course with the one that could speak Spanish. It was so funny though, because we had a "cajón" (percussion peruvian instrument) and we started to dance and sing, WOW, i HAD SO MUCH FUN with them.

The visiting was over and the students had prepared a special program for the kids, with games and a Bible story. The doctor and I, closed the medical clinic because we had run out of medicine. At that time, i could see from afar a volleyball net and i thought: a volleyball game in the middle of the jungle? WHY NOT!!

However, i was surprised because as soon as i got there they asked me for money to bet, make a team and compete to get our sol (peruvian currency) back. But in despite of the fact that there were 8 soles we were paying for, we all had so much fun.

The night came along and with it all activities stopped in order to have our last fellowship time together. It was the best time of the day. We had a service, they brought a generator and put out the speakers and the microphone in order to get started. My dad preached, the men from the community sang, but the best part was to watch and sense the great fellowship between our team and the brothers and sisters from the shipibo community. A group of boys sat down next to me and they wouldn't stop worshipping God with such every. The girls were dancing in their prettiest clothes and the adults would say with much conviction: Thank you, Lord.

A couple from the community got reconciled, others gave their life to Christ and others took challenges. I was in shocked, because you could see the mighty work the Lord had done and not because they were so far away from what we call civilization, it meant that had forgotten them. On the contrary, HE was still faithful....

-tan diferente-

Había comenzado un nuevo día, muy temprano y con el clima aún frio. Recogimos nuestro desayuno, nos subimos al bus, y al puerto nos dirigimos.

Bajamos del bus con el equipo médico, juguetes y alimentos que llevábamos para la siguiente comunidad. Pero no sabíamos lo que nos esperaba.

El puerto no es exactamente lo que me imaginé. Fue mucho más interesante. No era una estructura construida con un pensamiento arquitectónico ni mucho menos un muelle. Mi pensamiento tan citadino, me llevó a una idea muy alejada de la realidad, ya que se trataba de la orilla del río con un pequeño barranco que tenía un camino improvisado creado por las numerosas pisadas que le pasaron por encima.

Habían a la orilla del río Huallaga, muchos "peque peques" (botes de río), con mucha carga, en su mayoría cabezas de plátanos verdes listos para ser llevados a los puntos de venta.

Fue impresionante ver como pequeños hombres conseguían colocar de tres a cinco cabezas de plátano en sus hombros y cargarlas por la subida accidentada del puerto.
El pequeño camino para bajar a la orilla del río y trepar al bote fue muy interesante, sobre todo por el cargamento en nuestros hombros. ¡Definitivamente no teníamos la habilidad ni el equilibrio de estos hombres jaja!. Pero lo logramos.

Una vez dentro del bote había una cantidad de comerciantes vendiendo cepillos de dientes, pasta, comida, entre otros objetos que fueses a necesitar de último minuto para tu viaje. En un primer momento pensé que todos ellos irían en el bote con nosotros, y me estaba asustando al pensar que sería una viaje muy incómodo. Supuestamente el bote era solo para 30 personas, hasta que llegó la hora de partir y apresurados volvían los comerciantes a la orilla.

El conductor encendió el motor y con mucha habilidad comenzó a dirigir el bote río arriba. Siguiente parada; Limonjema.

Dos horas y media después, habíamos llegado a la nueva comunidad Shipibo de Limonjema. Nos recibieron con canciones y trajes típicos, y con muchas ganas de ayudar a cargar el equipaje.
Los niños corrían por todos lados, algunos hablaban español y otros solo te escuchaban. Estaban emocionados porque llegaban las visitas de la ciudad.

Primero nos llevaron a nuestro cuarto; el salón de clase. La comunidad contaba con dos salones grandes de clase. Era un ambiente muy ventilado que era lo único que importaba. De pronto, una vez dentro del salón volteamos y todos los niños habían agarrado una silla para sentarse y ver como alistábamos nuestras "camas". Unas sábanas y mosquiteros fueron suficientes para decir que ya estábamos instaladas.

Pero mientras intentaba alistar mis cosas, dos niñas se me acercaron con un libro, listas para sentarse y escuchar la historia detrás de esas páginas. Cuando ya había leído un par, alcé la mirada y me di con la sorpresa de que ya no eran dos las que atentamente escuchaban la historia, ahora eran por lo menos 15. ¡Me emocioné mucho porque recordé lo simple que es la felicidad para los niños!.

Sin embargo, por más que disfrutamos de ese momento habían otras cosas emocionantes por venir ...

Casi me olvide, un acontecimiento gracioso: cuando llegamos a la comunidad, la batería de mi Nikon murió y ellos no tienen electricidad. Pero felizmente, mi papa había llevado la otra cámara.

-so different-

A new day had begun, very early and with the weather still cool. We picked up our breakfast, jumped in the bus and head towards the port.

We stepped out of the bus with our meds, toys and food that we were taking for our next community. But we didn't know what was ahead of us.

The port wasn't exactly what i pictured. It was actually more interesting. It was not a structure build up with an architectural mentality or a dock. My city like mind took me to have an idea far from the reality, because it was actually about the side of a river with a small cliff with a pathway created by the several steps that had passed by.

By the side of the Huallaga river, there were many "peque peques" (the name of the river boats), with much much to sell, in its majority bananas ready to be taken to the fruit posts. (SEE foto 1 & 2 above)

It was impressive to see how all these little men were able to carry lots of these bananas on their shoulders and carry them up through the rugged path.

The short way to get down the riverside and climb in the boat was very interesting, especially with all the stuff we were carrying. We definitely didn't have the ability nor the balance those man had haha!!! But we made it. (See foto 3 above)

Once we were in the boat, there were all these vendors offering tooth paste, tooth brushes, food and any other things that you may need in the last minute for your trip. For a moment i thought that all of them would come with us on the trip and i was worried because i could see our trip being very uncomfortable. Supposedly the boat was for 30 people only, but when the time to leave arrived, they hurried their way back to the riverside.

The "driver" turn on the motor and with much ability he directed the boat upstream. Next stop: Limonjema.

Two and a half hours later, we had arrived to the new Shipibo community of Limonjema. They welcomed us with typical music and attire, and with much energy to help us unload the boat and carry our suitcases.

The kids were running all around, some speak Spanish others would just listen. They were excited to have guests from the city. (See foto 5,6 y 7 above).

They first took us to our rooms; their school classrooms. The community had two big classrooms. The place was well ventilated, which was the only thing that matter. Suddenly, once in the classroom we turned around and all the kids were sitting on these chairs on one side of the room ready to watch us get our "beds" ready. Some sheets and mosquito nets were enough to say we were ready.

But while i was getting my things, two little girls came to me with a book, ready to sit down and listen to the story behing these pages. Once ive been through a couple of pages, i looked up and surprised saw that it wasn't only two girls the once listening carefully but about 15 kids. I was so excited cause i remember how simple is happiness for kids!!

However, though we were having a great time there were other exciting things to come ....

Oh, almost forgot. Fun fact: when we got to the community, my Nikon battery died and there is no electricity at this town. Thankfully Dad brought the other camera :)

-6am. empieza la aventura-
Llegamos al campamento de FAIENAP, y nos esperaba un típico desayuno y unas cómodas casitas para descansar por una hora.

Luego nos alistamos y juntamos medicinas, galletas y otras cosas para las visitas del día. Primera parada ; la Mision Suiza.

Un ministerio dirigido por suizos en el que ayudan a las personas de las comunidades nativas a entrenarse espiritualmente para ser líderes en sus propias comunidades y también para ser entrenados en labores que les permitan generar ingresos como carpintería, crianza de animales, tejer, etc.

Segunda parada; comunidad Mastanawas. Llegamos a esta comunidad en medio de un relleno sanitario. El fuerte olor a basura nos dio una pista de las condiciones en las que vivían estas personas.

Llegamos a la casa del jefe de la comunidad y fue muy agradable el cariñoso recibimiento. Sin embargo, ver una realidad tan diferente a la nuestra fue muy chocante. Pero ahí estábamos, listos con un doctor y una enfermera para atender siquiera algunas de sus algunas de sus necesidades como curar la pierna del jefe que no hace muchos días se había herido con su herramienta de trabajo.

Los niños sonreían, algunos te hablaban en español y otros solo entendían pero no podían hablar más que su lengua nativa. Pero qué maravilloso es nuestro Dios, que permite que la iglesia local tenga contacto con esta comunidad para llevarles comida, amor y la palabra de Dios.
Mientras capturaba estas memorias con mi lente, una de las niñas se me acercaba para jugar y reirnos un rato. ¡Fue muy tierna! Su nombre es Luz, su papa es el jefe de la comunidad y le gustan los caramelos

Luego de que los niños eran atendidos pasaron a jugar un rato, a recibir unos regalos y a escuchar algunas historias de la Biblia.

El final del día se acercaba y con el las entregas finales. Llevamos comida no perecible a las familias y les repartimos una bolsa grande a cada una. Así terminó nuestro primer día, que en conclusión fue maravilloso. Creo que viviendo en una gran ciudad como Lima nunca te imaginas que puedan existir lugares tan pequeños y remotos en otra parte del mundo. Wow, y esto fue sólo el comienzo.

-6am. the adventure begins-

We arrived to FAIENAP's camp and a typical breakfast and comfortable little houses were waiting for us in order to rest for an hour.

Then we got ready and put together medicines, cookies, and other stuff to take with us to our visits. First stop: Mision Suiza (Mission of Switzerland)

It's a ministry led by swiss in which they help native communities to train spiritually to be the leaders in their own communities and also to be trained in different activities to generate income like carpentry, raise animals, weaving, etc. (See pictures above Foto 5 y 6).

Second Stop: Mastanawas community We arrived to this community located in the middle of a garbage dump. The strong smell of trash could already tell us something about the conditions in which these families lived. (See picture above Foto 7)

We got to the chief's house and it was very nice to see how they welcome us with such warmth attitude. However, to see a reality so different to ours was shocking. But there we were with a doctor and a nurse ready to attend some of their needs like helping to take care of the chief's leg, which got hurt with his working tool a few days before. (see pictures above Foto 8 and 9)

The kids were smiling, some would speak to you in Spanish and others could understand you but would only speak in their native language. But how wonderful to see that our God was making able for the local church to have contact with this community and take food, love and the Word of God to them. While i was capturing memories with my lens, on of the girls got close to me to play and laugh together. She was so cute!! (see picture above Foto 10). Her name is Luz, her dad was the community's chief and she likes candy.

After the kids visited the doctor, we gathered them to play, receive some gifts and listen to a few Bible stories. (see pictures above Foto 11 y 12)

The end of the day was getting close and with it we delire the last gifts. We took non perishable food and give a big bag to each of the families.
This is how our day ended, and in conclusión it was a wonderful day.
I think that living in such a huge city like Lima, you never imagined that there are tiny places existing in some other place of the world. Wow, and this was only the beginning.

Una hora de vuelo y llegamos a la ciudad de Pucallpa. Desde que colocamos el pie fuera del avión, la humedad comenzó a abrumarnos y nos impulsó a despojarnos de las chompas que vestíamos por el frio de Lima.

Caminamos del avión a la sala donde recibimos el equipaje.

Cada uno de los alumnos buscaba sus cajas, maletas y a la vez intentaba despertarse. Creo que Oscar no fue tan exitoso, a penas cogió su equipaje se quedó dormido en el piso jaja.

Una vez que salimos de esa sala, afuera nos esperaba Irma. Una mujer que irradiaba el amor de Dios y su vocación por servirle (aprendí mucho de ella durante todo el viaje).

Sin embargo, a pesar de que ella llegó temprano, faltaba el bus que nos llevaría a nuestro primer destino : FAIENAP (campamento de la asociación de las iglesias nativas).

Pero aún así fue bueno, los alumnos aprovecharon para compartir un tiempo juntos conversando y riendo. Mientras que para mí la aventura fotográfica ya había comenzado.

Luggage & Equipaje

De pronto llamaron a papa y le dijeron que el bus no podía entrar y que había que llevar todo afuera. ¡Pucha, qué flojera! jaja, pero igual lo hicimos. La verdad es que fue de Dios que tengamos la fuerza para sobrevivir ese día porque NADIE durmió las debidas ocho horas para funcionar, creo que tres fueron lo máximo que alcanzamos.

Pero ahí estábamos, sentados en un bus cuya puerta estaba abierta por el abundante calor, un poco viejo pero cómodo, y simplemente rumbo a las afueras de la ciudad a sumergirnos poco a poco en la selva ...

The bus & El bus

-we arrived, 5am-

One hour flight and we were already in Pucallpa city. From the very first moment we put our feet off the plane, we felt the heat and humidity coming to us and make us feel already overwhelmed, so we had to remove the jackets and sweaters that we were wearing for the cold of Lima.

We walked from the plane to the gate where we received our luggage. So each of the students were venturing to look for their boxes, suitcases and at the same time trying to wake up. Though i don't think Oscar quite accomplished that, as he feel asleep on the floor after grabbing his bag (first picture above).

Once we left that gate, we met with Irma who was waiting for us. A women who irradiated the love of God and a passion to serve Him. (i learned so much from her during this trip).

However, though she was there early the bus wasn't and we weren't able yet to reach our next destination: FAIENAP ( a camp for the association of native churches).

But it was all good because the students were able to bond and share a moment of conversation. Meanwhile for me the photographic adventure had already started.

Suddenly, they called dad and told him the bus wash't able to make it all the way in the airport so we needed to take everything outside. Man, we were so lazy! haha, but we did it anyways. The truth is that God gave us the strength to go through that day because NOBODY slept their eight hours in order to function, i think the max. we hit was 3 hours.

But there we were, sitting in the bus (picture above) with its door open because of the abundant hear, it was a little old but still comfortable, and we were simply heading outside the city to dive little by little into the jungle ...

¡Qué emoción!. Es viernes y lo mejor de todo es que es fin de finales. Eso también quiere decir que finalmente podré compartir con ustedes las aventuras que mi nikon y yo hemos vividos en estos últimos meses.

3am de un viernes de Junio me desperté con mucha dificultad. Sin embargo, supe que teníamos que estar en el aeropuerto pronto. Tomé una maleta del tamaño de una mochila y metí lo básico para sobrevivir de las picaduras de mosquitos. Antes de salir por la puerta, tomé lo que sería lo más importante para el viaje; mi cámara.

Una vez en el aeropuerto, esperamos con mi papa la llegada de sus 18 alumnos. Poco a poco, vimos aparecer rostros cansados con pocas horas de sueño pero que al mismo tiempo expresaban mucha ansiedad y emoción por lo que se venía. Trajeron consigo medicinas, galletas, un balón de fútbol, entre otros.

Subimos a la sala de embarque y cuando estabamos abordando el avión surgió el primer incidente; faltaban dos alumnos y ya era muy tarde. Cuando de pronto, dos hombrecitos llegaron corriendo con la lengua afuera diciendo: ¡Pastor, casiiiito nos deja el avión, por poco y no nos dejan entrar a la sala de embarque!.

Uno de ellos se quedo a dormir en la casa del otro para estar más cerca del aeropuerto y llegar a tiempo, jajaja que curioso como los dos se quedaron dormidos.

Asi comenzó nuestra gran aventura...

{ So excited! It is Friday and the best part of everything is that is the end of finals. This also means that i will finally be able to share with you the different adventures i have shared with my Nikon.

3am of a friday of the month of June i woke up with much difficulty. However, i knew that we had to get to the airport soon. Took a suitcase of the size of a backpack and put all the basic items to survive the mosquitos bites. Before i head out, i took what was the most important thing for the trip; my camera.

Once at the airport, we waited with my dad for his 18 students. Little by little, there appeared all these tired faces with only a few hours of sleep but that at the same time expressed anxiety and emotion for what it was to come. They brought with themselves medicines, cookies, a soccer ball, and other things.

We head to the boarding gate and when we were boarding the place the first problem came up; we were missing two students and it was already very late. When all of a sudden, two short men arrived running with their tongues out and said: Pastor, we were this close to miss the plane and we were almost not able to even get to the boarding gate!

One of them slept over at the other man's house in order to be closer to the airport and arrive early, haha how funny that both of them slept in.

And this is how our great adventure took off ... }
